The Strong National Museum of Play has officially announced its 2026 inductees for the World Video Game Hall of Fame. This year, the selection honors four distinct titles that fundamentally altered the landscape of digital entertainment and established the rules for their respective genres. The prestigious list of winners includes:
- Angry Birds
- Silent Hill
- Dragon Quest
- FIFA International Soccer
Mobile gaming becomes mainstream
Rovio’s Angry Birds, which debuted in 2009, stands as the most widely recognized project in this year’s selection. It proved that global success did not require high – end hardware or complex controllers, as a simple touchscreen and a slingshot mechanic were enough to capture the world’s attention. The game rapidly evolved into a massive cultural phenomenon, spawning everything from merchandise to animated feature films and even physical theme parks. Museum experts highlight that this title was the primary force in making mobile gaming a mainstream hobby accessible to everyone.
Redefining horror through atmosphere
The horror title Silent Hill, developed by Konami, earned its place for successfully pioneering the psychological horror subgenre. While other games of its era focused on sudden jump scares, this project relied on a thick atmosphere of dread, surreal imagery, and its signature fog to unsettle players. It focused on internal demons and psychological discomfort, a narrative approach that permanently changed how stories are told within video games.
Legacy of RPG and sports simulators
Dragon Quest – released in 1986 by Enix – served as the essential foundation for the Japanese role-playing game genre. The game established the core tenets of the industry, such as turn – based combat systems, character progression, and the concept of an epic party – based journey. Without its historical influence, the evolution of modern RPGs would have followed a significantly different path.
FIFA International Soccer, the 1993 debut of what became Electronic Arts’ most successful franchise, is the final inductee for 2026. Although the brand has since transitioned to the EA Sports FC name, the original game remains the cornerstone of the sports simulation genre. It demonstrated that a soccer simulation could be a dynamic and visually compelling experience rather than just a simple collection of pixels.
This year’s induction process was highly competitive, leaving several major candidates off the final list. The museum now houses a total of 53 legendary projects, each of which has left a significant footprint on digital culture. The following titles were among the notable contenders that did not make the cut this year:
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- League of Legends
- Mega Man
While these classic hits receive their honors, modern developers are looking toward the future by creating a European alternative to the Unreal Engine. This emerging technology is expected to provide the technical framework for the next generation of video game legends.
