Phil Spencer’s Most Anticipated Title Lives: State of Decay 3 Alpha Testing Announced for 2026

After a period of intense speculation, Undead Labs has officially confirmed that State of Decay 3 is progressing steadily toward its debut. The studio has announced a series of public alpha tests for the high-stakes zombie survival game, with the first phase set to kick off in May 2026.

Prospective players are invited to submit their applications through the project’s official portal, while those not included in the initial rollout will be placed on a waiting list for future testing stages. According to art director and franchise co-creator Brant Fitzgerald, the early builds will focus on several fundamental gameplay pillars:

  • Four-player cooperative survival
  • Advanced base-building and fortification mechanics
  • Comprehensive resource management systems
  • Visceral combat encounters with the infected

To celebrate the announcement, the development team has unveiled the latest gameplay footage featuring brief combat snippets and atmospheric concept art. This marks a significant shift in communication for Undead Labs, as representatives promised to provide more frequent updates throughout the remainder of the development cycle.

The story unfolds several years after the onset of the apocalypse, where the plague remains a primary threat that continues to mutate. Survivors must now contend with an evolving biological nightmare, facing off against both familiar enemies and entirely new, lethal variations of mutated zombies.

The combat system is being fundamentally rebuilt to deliver a more responsive and intense experience for the player. By introducing fluid controls and high-fidelity character animations, the developers aim to make every skirmish with the undead feel more dynamic and physically grounded than in previous entries.

Crafting and construction are being tailored to reflect a world that has been thoroughly picked over by other survivors. This environment of scarcity forces players to be more inventive, improvising essential tools and defensive structures from the limited resources found within the ruins of civilization.

Social interaction is at the heart of the experience, with a major emphasis placed on cooperative freedom. State of Decay 3 will support up to four players in a fully shared open world without tethering restrictions – allowing teammates to start in different regions and explore independently while still influencing the group’s overall progression.

While the focus on multiplayer is substantial, the studio is not overlooking those who prefer the solitary struggle of the apocalypse. Undead Labs has confirmed that the single-player campaign is being crafted as a complete and polished experience, acknowledging that a large portion of the community enjoys playing the game solo.

«State of Decay 3 станет крупнейшей эволюцией серии, развивая системную глубину предыдущих частей, расширяя открытый мир, улучшая кооперативную свободу, боевую систему и делая больший акцент на эмоциональном повествовании»

A significant portion of the team was dedicated to supporting State of Decay 2 until late 2024. Since shifting into full-scale production for the third installment, the studio has focused on analyzing player feedback to retain the series’ core strengths while overhauling more controversial mechanics from the past.

The development is a collaborative effort involving several internal Microsoft partners to ensure the highest technical standards. Experts from various divisions are contributing their specialized knowledge to the project:

  • The Coalition and Obsidian Entertainment are consulting on AI, animation, and combat
  • The game is being built from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5

State of Decay 3 is currently slated for release on PC and Xbox Series X|S. As a first-party title, it will be available to subscribers via Game Pass on the day of its launch, and the developers have already confirmed a full Russian text localization for the project.

The journey has been long since the game’s initial reveal in July 2020, which was followed by a multi-year silence that sparked rumors of cancellation amid Microsoft’s restructuring. However, in January 2026, Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan personally assured fans that the project is proceeding according to the internal roadmap.

These updates coincide with a broader shift in strategy at Microsoft Gaming under the leadership of Asha Sharma. As the company prepares for a strong 2026, State of Decay 3 is set to join an impressive lineup of major releases, including the next Fable and Forza Horizon 6.
