Slay the Spire 2: The Return of the Top Roguelike or “Long Live Sleepless Nights!”

Slay the Spire 2: we’re waiting for this!

The developers of the first part of the game, Slay the Spire, decided to please fans with the news: the release of Slay the Spire 2 will take place very soon. This Roguelike is remembered by its loyal fans for its simplicity, minimalism, and, of course, cards. There are never too many cards!

Many cards and relics that give real power and a sweet victory.

7 months ago, the official Mega Crit channel released a trailer for Slay the Spire 2 on YouTube. At the moment, the video has gained about 772 thousand views. Fans are waiting for what else to say.

Slay the Spire

Attentive ones noticed that The Defect is missing from the trailer: “Where is The Defect? Is he safe? Is he alright?” Others wrote comments like: “Another 3K hours of my life flashing before my eyes in 48 seconds”. The exact release date of Slay the Spire 2 was not named in the trailer. We know that the game will be released in 2025. I wish cool games would release DLC and sequels more often!

New characters in Slay the Spire 2

The developers promise to add new interesting characters to the new part, but so far we only know one named Necrobinder – a wandering lich. It is known that he has only 35 bases HP, which makes him more fragile compared to other original heroes of the game. This can only mean one thing: his defense will be strengthened.

Watching the game trailer, you can see that the animation and graphics have become much more colorful and better than in the previous part. This is because Slay the Spire 2 is written on the Godot engine. I wonder what enemies and new cards await us? Time will tell.

Slay the Spire: let’s remember how it all began

As we remember, the first part of the game was released in January 2019 by Mega Crit Studio.

Slay the Spire is an indie roguelike, collectible card game, the point is to assemble your deck and climb to the very top of the tower. No one will just let you pass, so be prepared to fight back against the enemies you meet along the way. But how does combat in a card game even happen?

Slat the Spire

You are born, climb up the highest and relatively dark tower, find cards that improve your deck in one form or another, climb higher, see more cards, and finally kill the final boss, thereby completing the game, to be born again and repeat this path. You have cards that damage the enemy and those that, on the contrary, protect you from his attacks. After each battle, find new cards that hit a little harder and protect a little better.

Slay the Spire card selection

When you play for the first time, everything seems simple and clear: the higher the number on your cards, the better. This approach can take you through the entire game, but as soon as you decide to increase the difficulty, the beauty and complexity of Slay the Spire will begin to appear.

The main characters of Slay the Spire

Let’s get acquainted with the main characters. There are four of them and each has a unique set of cards. Let’s start with the first character you can play for. His name is The Ironclad. He sold his soul to the demons for the sake of the forces of darkness. The main tactic of the character: hit in the face until the enemy’s face is gone. He has 999 armor and strength and 200 HP (for example, other characters reach the final boss with 100 HP).

The Silent of Slay the Spire

The Ironclad, having found himself in a difficult situation, can tactically let his blood, thus taking away all his HP before the enemy does, thus achieving a complete moral victory. Or he can burn all his cards, leaving him with nothing, but causing a lot of damage. These strategies require planning each move and strategy.

The Ironclad vs enemies

The second character is The Silent. A huntress who came from the terrible lawless swamps in which she fought unimaginable monsters. She is capable of covering her opponent from head to toe in poison in one turn, effectively killing them up to 10 times.

The Silent of Slay the Spire

The Silent is a more sophisticated character compared to Ironclad. You need to play her very carefully because each subsequent battle can be your last. At the same time, The Silent’s potential is not inferior to any other character. She has the greatest potential in the game for the so-called endless turn.

However, if you do not like endlessly clicking the mouse on the cards, you can choose a third character. His name is The Defect. An abandoned automaton that has developed intelligence. If Ironclad is primarily about attacks, and The Silent is about skills, then The Defect is about powers. Power is a card that can be played only once per battle, but it gives permanent bonuses.

The Defect of Slay the Spire

The Defect is a character whose main essence is set up, the gradual creation of ideal conditions as the battle progresses. When all the cards are on the table, The Defect can bring the battle to complete automatism.  Why press buttons unnecessarily if both block and damage are passively generated? When playing as The Defect, the player often faces a choice of what exactly he wants: power now or potential for later.

The Defect vs enemies

The Watcher is a blind nun. Don’t be fooled by her appearance. From the outside, she may look like an innocent and sweet girl, but behind the shell hides a creature that has no morals and principles. Her main superpower is changing her mood 15 times per turn, sometimes falling into hysterics, calming down, and then literally killing the enemy with her whining.

The Watcher of Slay the Spire

Of course, The Watcher is a very strong character. Rage gives double damage, calmness – energy, mantra constantly accumulates. However, she takes double damage while enraged. The correct balance of the deck is important for The Watcher.

A little about decks and relics

A well-built deck can handle any obstacle that comes your way. You may get a nasty card that has infected your deck, which will not disappear under any circumstances. There is a relic that burns the curse, which also affects the bad card, which, however, refuses to die. You need to know which cards can be combined to get the most benefit. There are also 20 different artifacts, each of which does something unique. You can build a game plan around the rarer ones.

Relics in Slay The Spire

The key to a good game and victory is complete composure, calm, prudence, and strategic thinking. You can have the worst cards, and your enemies can have a lot of HP, and it would seem that everything is over – the game. However, using your mind and endurance, you will cope, even if it seems that everything will collapse now.

Each opponent is unique.  Some force your deck to be filled with bad cards, some forbid you to use too many cards. Some enemies punish you for being slow, while another enemy only gets weaker as the battle ends, but the first turns with him are the hardest.

The enemy of Slay the Spire

Your goal is to take into account all the features of your enemies and create a deck that is ready for any situation and opponent. Which path will you choose, and which cards will you prioritize? Will you prepare for more difficult battles or try to avoid them? Will you be able to remember about the relics and take full advantage of their power?

When you step by step create your cool deck, spend time and effort on it, and then enjoy the game and the hero’s abilities, you involuntarily think: “What a great guy I am!”

The game has 20 difficulty levels, which gradually open after each victory. The first 15 are still bearable, but the last 5 are pure hell. You can be super pumped up, but if you get the wrong cards – that’s a problem.

The map of Slay the Spire

The ending of the game and the battle with the final boss are quite mediocre. The background is gray and boring (I remind you, this is the finale), and the boss himself is just a big gray heart. Probably, the designers didn’t bother much here.
